How to use IC cards

When boarding

  1. Tap your card against the IC card reader at the bus entrance.
  2. Continue in to the bus after you hear a beep.

    * The remaining card balance is displayed when you hear this beep.

When disembarking

  1. Tap your card against the IC card reader on top of the fare box.
  2. Disembark the bus after you hear a beep.

    * The fare is automatically deducted from the remaining card balance when you hear this beep.

If a yellow screen appears, the bus operator will speak to the holder of the corresponding card.

The yellow screen appears if the fare cannot be processed correctly because the card tap failed, the remaining card balance is insufficient, or the holder failed to tap the card when boarding. Try tapping once again.

  • Do not tap your IC card against the reader when holding another IC card or something else that might interfere with electromagnetic waves.
  • If you would like to pay the fare for two or more people, a child fare, or a welfare discount fare, inform the bus operator before tapping your card. Failure to do so will result in the deduction of only one regular fare from the card.

How to recharge IC cards

  • Chuo Bus service windows (cash only)

    • At the service window, inform the clerk of the amount to charge. Present your IC card and cash.
    • Payments are accepted in multiples of 1,000 yen.
    • The maximum balance you can charge is 20,000 yen.

    * The Chuo Bus counter at New Chitose Airport does not accept card charging.

  • On board a bus (Only 1,000-yen bills are accepted.Coins and other bills will not be accepted.)

    • Ask the bus operator to accept payment only when the bus is not moving.
    • The balance can be increased 1,000 yen at a time.
    • No charging is possible if the remaining card balance is 10,001 yen or higher.

Please refrain from asking the operator to charge your card when the bus is congested.

  • Automatic payment (only with SAPICA)

    • If the card balance falls below a certain amount, the card will be charged automatically when the card is tapped against the reader on disembarking.
    • To enable automatic charging, bring a personalized SAPICA and a credit card
and apply by completing and submitting an automatic payment application form.
    • Automatic payment application forms are provided at subway stations and bus service offices.

(Example) Automatically adds an additional 1,000 yen
if the remaining card balance drops below 1,000 yen.
